Surfmark is addressing the basic, yet largely unmet need of web search – “How can I save the efforts of my search so that I don’t have to do it yet again”. By solving this problem, we aim to become the destination for task-oriented searches.

The problem

Search engines are extremely efficient in pointing you to the right sets of information. However, many task-oriented searches require considerable effort, beyond just locating content sources. These efforts include sorting, cross-referencing, analyzing and verifying information. Some of the best content is not even indexed by search engines and is found only through serendipity. These efforts represent highly reusable and incredibly valuable knowledge. Yet, most of this knowledge gets lost, both in terms of our ability to reuse it for our own benefit and in terms of helping others, who we know must be going through the same rigmarole!

The solution

Surfmark allows you to ‘recycle’ this currently wasted ‘free’ resource. We provide a set of browser-based & desktop applications and hosted services that allow you to effortlessly save, organize and share the knowledge created as a by-product of your search efforts. Our cloud hosted website allows full-text search as well as consumption of shared content without the need for an account or need for installation of any application.

Our browser-based extensions and application allow you to:

• Annotate the pages that you are browsing
• Capture the browsed pages under different topics so that they are available off-line, while maintaining absolute privacy as everything is first stored only in your computer.
• Conduct full-text search on your saved pages and arrange them into flow graphs (i.e. Surfmarks)
• Share these Surfmarks by uploading them to our website and post short URL links for the Surfmarks to the social networks
• Upload the Surfmarks to your own private space and collaborate with others through password-controlled access.

Our website allows you to:

• Find and view the Surfmarks through keyword based search. All the content including your notes, descriptions and tags are indexed.
• Edit all aspects of already published Surfmarks including rearranging the flow, adding or deleting pages and adding or editing annotations.

Getting started

Download and install the standalone browser extension as well as the application to fully benefit from all the features that Surfmark provides. The specific features and benefits of the standalone extension and the complete application are described in the download page. Our Firefox extension is also available through Mozilla organization’s 'Add-ons for Firefox' site.

If you are not able to download the extension and/or application, you can still view the Surfmarks that have already been published and benefit from the collective efforts of others. However, only those who have contributed to the knowledge can edit the published Surfmarks.
